Decisions

What we believed, and what it cost

Every decision consumes some combination of money, time, resources, and opportunity. Record the belief while it is still a belief. Review it when the date arrives.

Recorded with the blueprint

Vector Labs/November 1, 2026/Decision

The tree is the organizational model

Decided
Vector Labs will understand itself as a tree: soil, roots, trunk, branches, leaves, and fruit. Each venture keeps its own tree.
Why
One mental model stops three different customers, risks, and business models from being treated as a single product.
Alternatives
A conventional org chart, or a single roadmap that treats Eligibl, WalletKing, and Caldera as features of one company.
Consumes
The time to maintain four trees, and the discipline to update them when customer facts replace today's assumptions.
Expected
Someone returning in January, April, or six months can see what was being built, why, and what the work was trying to accomplish.

Vector Labs/November 1, 2026/Decision

Separate ventures, shared trunk

Decided
Eligibl, WalletKing, and Caldera are distinct businesses. Vector Core is internal infrastructure. Fruit may leave the tree and become independent, and that counts as success.
Why
Independent accountability is the point of the portfolio. Shared infrastructure is how a small organization affords it.
Alternatives
Fold the products into one brand and one set of books, or spin each idea out before any of them has customers.
Consumes
Separate records, separate goals, and the overhead of not letting one venture's urgency silently consume the others.
Expected
A portfolio review can say where time and capital went, and which venture is neglected, without pretending they share a customer.

Vector Core/November 1, 2026/Decision

Vector Core stays an internal tool

Decided
Get Vector Core useful, then use it. Version one is the portfolio, goals, decisions, knowledge, and a basic operating record. The AI agent waits.
Why
Three ventures already need attention. A fourth product would consume the time the tool is supposed to return.
Alternatives
Rebuild a full workspace, start the agent now, or keep running the company from scattered notes.
Consumes
A short build, measured in days. Explicitly not months of interface work, integrations, or automation.
Expected
By November 8, 2026 the organization can be reviewed from one place, and development time goes back to the ventures.

Eligibl/November 1, 2026/Decision

Charlotte outreach targets are not partners

Decided
The first calls are Mecklenburg County Community Resource Centers, including the Valerie C. Woodard Center, Ella B. Scarborough Center, Just1Call, Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy, and United Way / NC 211.
Why
A named list makes the first 30 days concrete. Calling them partners before a conversation would be fiction.
Alternatives
A broader national scan, or waiting to build more product before talking to anyone local.
Consumes
Founder time for outreach and three discovery conversations. No partnership commitments.
Expected
Five contacts approached, three real conversations, and a clearer view of who could champion a local pilot.

WalletKing/November 1, 2026/Hypothesis

WalletKing does not buy growth before the experience is real

Decided
Start near ten testers, learn from their actual use, and expand toward twenty by December. Do not spend heavily on user-generated content or advertising before that. About $5 a month is the willingness-to-pay question.
Why
The soil is financial anxiety. The risk is shipping a budgeting app that informs people and does not create accountability.
Alternatives
Paid acquisition now, or holding the beta until the product feels finished.
Consumes
Personal time observing friction. Plaid and hosting costs already in play. Little or no ad spend.
Expected
A December judgment, from real use, about whether people return and whether they would pay.

Caldera Compliance/November 1, 2026/Hypothesis

Caldera prepares the audit and does not issue it

Decided
The offer is a coordinated SOC 2 readiness outcome: assessment, policy, evidence, remediation, implementation, and audit coordination. An independent auditor issues the report. About $60,000 and three to five months were discussed as illustrations.
Why
Buyers are purchasing an outcome. Blurring Caldera with the auditor would misstate both the product and the liability.
Alternatives
Software-only compliance tooling, or a fixed-price promise before a client has tested the delivery.
Consumes
About eight months of platform work already spent. The first engagement's real cost, staffing, and margin are unknown.
Expected
Q1 discovery produces a first client, and that engagement replaces the illustrative price and timeline with actuals.
